What is K-POP?
K-Pop (or Korean Popular Music) is an increasingly popular genre of music that is not limited to a specific type of song or dance. Though K-pop includes a variety of styles, these songs are always catchy and often feature choreography that matches the song well. From signature moves that go viral online to the repetition of chorus sections, K-Pop is eye-catching and challenging while remaining enjoyable for any level of dance experience.
About Me
Hi there! My name is Yun, and I am the founder of Yunik (pronounced “yoo-neek”) Dance. I’ve been passionately teaching K-pop dance since 2018 and have led over 5,500 classes across Vancouver, Australia, Ottawa, and the Yukon Territories. With this experience, I’m proud to be one of Vancouver’s most seasoned K-pop instructors. My studio has also been featured on CBC and Global News, highlighting our impact within the local dance and K-pop community.
Originally from Korea, I began dancing at the age of 6 and continued my training after moving to Vancouver with my family at 9. Throughout my childhood, I trained in a variety of styles including ballet, contemporary, and lyrical. At fourteen, I decided to step away from pre-professional training and took a break from dance altogether.
A few years later, my love for dance was reignited when I chose it as an elective in high school—right around the time PSY’s “Gangnam Style” went viral. My teacher asked me to teach the choreography to my class for a school-wide performance, and that moment unexpectedly marked the beginning of my journey as a dance instructor.
During my university years, I began formally training in hip hop and went on to dance with multiple teams. I competed both locally and internationally at events such as World of Dance, VIBE, and the Australian Dance Crew Championships. My dance style has also been shaped by my time living and training abroad in Korea, Japan, China, Hong Kong, Australia, and the United States, where I worked with world-class choreographers—some of whom have trained artists under major K-pop entertainment companies such as SM, JYP, HYBE, and YG.
In 2018, I began teaching K-pop dance in Australia, where I truly discovered my passion for teaching. After returning to Vancouver, I taught K-pop and hip hop classes at multiple studios across the Lower Mainland for students ages 3 and up. I’ve also collaborated with the official BTS Vancouver fan group and many local schools such as Anderson Elementary, Garden City Elementary, Heritage Woods Secondary to host K-pop workshops.
I love teaching and I especially enjoy teaching beginners. Helping my students grasp complex dance movements and watching them gain confidence are among the most rewarding aspects of my work. I hope that through my dance classes, you will find your love of dance as well!
